The general public - how to inform and educate people

Curious minds, amateur meteorologists or oceanographers, Sunday fishermen or diving instructors, high school teachers and pupils, university students… Many people are interested in getting real time information on the state of the ocean. Mercator can and should also be providing answers to questions from ordinary members of the public.

This is now what it is trying to do on a daily basis, by replying to emails from the public, participating in conferences and contributing articles to popular magazines. Mercator Océan also publishes a twice-yearly educational review aimed at the general public ("Projection Mercator"), in which it describes scientific advances and events falling within the scope of the Mercator project.

Mercator is also participating in Argonautica, a CNES educational project, whose goal is to educate high school students about the ocean and the marine environment. To do this, project team members come and teach lessons in schools. Mercator also provides ocean bulletins on the monitoring of Argos transmitters launched by boat skippers in the middle of the ocean or even transported on the backs of marine animals.
